CSS JANUARY 2021 E-NEWSLETTER

Our latest report analyzes the values depicted in tween television programming over the past 50 years. Our findings showed the two most dramatic shifts in values were around community feeling and fame. These shifts were primarily linked to content on Reality TV. We believe the findings in this report are especially significant, given the stark differences between the outgoing and incoming president. Download the full report to learn more.

In TOMBOY, Lisa Selin Davis recounts the history, science, and psychology of girls who defied gender expectations—and looks at the possibilities for their future. Her book chronicles the evolution of the pink/blue divide that rules modern childhood; the reasons some girls straddle or cross that divide; and what those girls grow up to be, including the relationship between childhood gender non-conformity and LGBTQ identities.

Children's awareness of gender begins at a very early age and develops into rigid social categories that can lead to stereotypes. Media is one of the places that feeds their learning through the different types of characters shown on-screen. Read more about gender portrayals and how they influence children's beliefs and attitudes in our latest blog.

Movies that have a cast involving a variety of backgrounds, may not reflect true diversity in the storytelling. CSS has developed an informal starting point test to help evaluate Authentic Inclusive Representation for racial representation in films. Join more than 500 participants and take the REM test to see if your favorite films pass!
