In May, 2020 We Recognized National Foster Care Month

In Celebration of Foster Care Month in May of 2020, we teamed up with YouTube Kids, Blackish star Marcus Scribner and our friends at the UCLA Film School and Allies for Every Child to create and share inspirational videos about life during and after foster care. The videos were featured on YouTube Kids along with a curated list of kids content. We also provide companion tips for talking to children about foster care. As of January, 2021, our playlist has had over 37M views!

These selfie videos feature inspiring young people who overcame challenging early life experiences through the support of many incredible advocates, families and organizations in the foster care system.

Why and How This Came Together

Funded by a grant from The UCLA Pritzker Center for Strengthening Children and Families we held collaborative workshops that brought together scholars, storytellers, and community stakeholders. Through these conversations, it became clear that negative stereotypes of Foster Care in the media impact youth. YouTube Kids jumped in and offered to help us highlight positive representations of these youth on their channel. During National Foster Care Month, we want the world to know there is more to kids’ lives than the time they spent in Foster Care.

Foster Care Blog Series

Media content has the power to shape perceptions and views on a mass scale. Unfortunately, media portrayals of youth in foster care are often negative and perpetuate unhelpful stereotypes. This special blog series explores this topic from multiple perspectives to inform and inspire the creation of accurate, empowering, and socially responsible media portrayals of foster care.
