Teens and Screens Gaming 2024
About the Study
Teens and Screens is a nationally-sourced annual research report conducted by the Center for Scholars & Storytellers at UCLA to understand more about what young people care about and want to see in entertainment media. Check out prior years’ reports here. And view our press release for this project on UCLA’s newsroom here.
This year was the first year that the center asked about gaming in the annual report, with results highlighting what a big part of life gaming is for young people today.
Community in Gaming. The resounding majority (68.4%) of adolescents who play games report personally finding community in games. Only 12% of adolescents report not playing video games.
A Craving for Representation. 80% of adolescents reported wanting to see
characters that looked like them in games. Despite this, a majority (50.6%) of adolescents who play video games report it being difficult for them to find games with characters that look like them.
Adolescents want to Play Games. The majority (39.2%) of adolescents chose playing video games over watching a TV show/movie (33.3%) or scrolling on social media (27.5%).
These are just a few of our interesting findings. Check out the full report to view more statistics, anecdotes from participants, and data visualizations.
